Pink the Rink Hosted by Flyers Youth Hockey

On Saturday, October 19, 2024, the Flyers Youth Hockey 2013 Team, will be hosting a Pink the Rink fundraising event in partnership with the Mena Singer Foundation. The Mena Singer Foundation recognizes the important role that sports plays in creating a support network for young athletes, with a goal to ensure children have continued access to their athletic team and corresponding support system by providing benevolent assistance to those who may have otherwise been forced to the sidelines. The Foundation was founded by Mena Singer’s two sons who grew up playing youth hockey. After Mena passed away from breast cancer, they wanted to create a foundation that helped keep youth in the sport they loved while going through the financial hardships that a cancer diagnosis can bring. The Singer brothers knew firsthand how hockey could provide a positive outlet in a child’s life and offer respite and support.

This foundation is close to the heart of Flyers Youth Team Manager, Erin Kane, who had a breast cancer diagnosis herself, and found support through the Mena Singer Foundation, to ensure her son could continue playing the sport he loved. This will be the second year that the Flyers Youth 2013 Team is hosting this event, and Erin mentioned that it’s already much larger and improved! It just so happens that Erin found herself on the same team as another parent, Michele who was seeking a fundraising event to bring the team together and tie into hockey. So naturally, Erin mentioned the Mena Singer Foundation and it turns out Michele also had her own diagnosis, and this foundation was the perfect fit for what they were looking for. Erin and Michele are co-chairs for the event this year and have added more raffle baskets, a Photo Booth, the bake sale and merchandise sales as they build beyond last year's success.

When asked about the teams' and players' feelings regarding the event, Erin shared that the coaches have conveyed how meaningful and personal it is. The kids are eager to take part, contributing by baking items for the bake sale and volunteering their time to sell both baked goods and raffle tickets. This gives the players an opportunity to really be part of the event and actively involved in the fundraising efforts. Extra special this year, the 12U team got special pink jersey’s to wear for the game, which includes a patch to write in someone they are fighting for - so it truly has a personal touch for all involved. This event fosters a sense of community within the team and provides the players with the chance to transform a difficult challenge into a positive experience where they can genuinely make an impact.

Pink the Rink, taking place on Saturday, October 19th, at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, New Jersey, will include 6 total games, with the main event being the 1:30pm game, where the Flyers Youth 12U team will face off against the Mercer Chiefs. All donations will benefit the Mena Singer Foundation and support Flyers Youth Hockey. We wish the teams the best of luck and applaud Flyers Youth Hockey for their fundraising efforts for such a great cause.
